The following are my favorite recent reads with brief descriptions of why I'm so enamored.
Housekeeping by Marilynne Robinson.
This book is definitely a mood piece.  Interspersed with frigid winter air and train-like actions that chug along with rhythm are direct truthful statements about emotion, loss, and fear that will haunt you.  Robinson is a prolific writer.  She has a way of creating sentences that are so unique and perfectly stated that I (who never rereads anything) have gone back to admire their simultaneous beauty and utility to the story.
The Girls' Guide to Hunting and Fishing by Melissa Bank.
This shit is enjoyable, albeit a bit heavy in certain moments but altogether a quick read.  Bank's story is funny and charming.  This book is a humorous and relatable (especially for young women), but carries an underlying severity and honesty of life that is difficult shake off after reading.
Many Lives, Many Masters by Brian Weiss.
This book can literally change your life.  It's written by a successful clinical psychiatrist who, through a patient, discovers the existence of the soul and realizes that there is more to this life than mere physicality.  It is comforting and beautiful.  Also, a very quick read.
On Acting by Sanford Meisner.
I love the feeling of satisfaction that comes from seeking personal improvement and feeling I've made a dent.  This book is not only psychologically informative, but if you're at all interested in acting, it offers a glimpse into the renowned technical training of Sanford Meisner.
What are some of your favorite books of late?
